Whether it's about communicating research, illustrating results, or simply expressing thoughts, humans are primarily visual beings. In response to the increasing demand for efficiency and performance in communication, innovative tools are emerging to facilitate the expression of our imagination, ideas, and concepts. Artificial intelligence, which has undergone exponential development, enables the creation of unprecedented and surprising visual outputs, addressing numerous requirements of our daily lives as researchers.

But is image generation through AI as easy as it is claimed to be? What are its intricacies, nuances, and most importantly, its impacts and implications? Moreover, at what "cost" does it come?

In this workshop, we will explore the subject and themes related to AI-generated images. We will delve into why and how this content is specifically relevant to doctoral researchers. The objectives for the day include understanding the mechanics and intricacies of image generation, exploring its potential applications in research, and critically examining the ethical and practical considerations associated with it.

At the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

• Gain a comprehensive understanding of the limitations associated with AI-generated images.
• Develop a critical perspective towards AI-generated images, including the ability to evaluate their quality, authenticity, and potential biases.
• Acquire a basic grasp of the fundamental workings of certain AI technologies, such as neural networks and machine learning, as they pertain to image generation.
• Master the essential skills of prompt writing within the context of MidJourney and effectively utilize prompts for generating high-quality images.
• Apply ethical considerations when using AI-generated images in appropriate contexts, ensuring responsible and ethical practices.
• Cultivate interdisciplinary collaboration and engage in fruitful discussions with peers regarding the potential applications and implications of AI-generated images in research.
• Enhance practical skills in generating and working with AI-generated images through hands-on exercises and demonstrations.
• Foster a critical mindset towards the application of AI-generated images in academia and develop an awareness of the potential impact on research integrity and communication.

Trainer: 

Dr Alexandre Pinault, Big Bang Brain - Creative Media, is a scientific mediator and video maker. During his academic career (PhD Neurosciences), he developed effective teaching and science communication and disemination skills that he put to use at the Musée de la Main (Lausanne) and at L'Éprouvette (UniL). His profile mixes audiovisual art, animation, design and special effects with extensive knowledge in the fields of science and medicine. Images and storytelling are also the core of the heart of his activity within "Neuracademia", an association for science vulgarization with focus on brain-related themes.
