Performing in the storm: Know What Matters to You

Energy and Stress Management Workout Series Workout #2

As a doctoral student or researcher, you may face an increasing demand on your time: there is a continuous flow of tasks, emails, and meetings calling for your immediate attention next to your own ambitious projects. This may result in unrealistic expectations on what can be achieved in a day especially in times like these, when opportunities for balancing activities like sports or seeing friends are severely limited. Eventually, even high performers struggle to stay motivated and to deliver and end up depleted until, inevitably, performance will drop. Then it is important to rebound quickly. The Workouts are highly experiential and intensive. You work on your own life situation. Therefore, we ask you to bring a story to share that is relevant to the topic. In each Workout, you will learn how to shift your mindset, acquire one or two state-of-the-art techniques for your self-management, and create a practice that will help you to navigate stressful situations in the future. Every Workout is a standalone training that can be taken without attending the other Workouts.

What do you care about? What matters to you most? This second Workout will guide you to towards your values, i.e. to the activities and things that really matter to you. To know "what makes your heart sing" is of outmost importance for stress and energy management and, ultimately, decision-making.

By the end of the Workout you will:

  • have articulated your core values in a Personal Statement, and
  • will know how to draw on them in order to prevail in the storm of your everyday life.
