A good understanding of project management is essential in an academic setting, where researchers are dealing with a wide range of diverse tasks. Planning and managing days, weeks and month goes a long way in keeping academics organized and increasing their productivity. Fundamentals of project management provides a comprehensive introduction to the management of projects executed by a single person. The course will provide an overview of the theory and principles as well as how to apply these principles to a PhD project. Participants will learn simple and effective tools to define goals, structure objectives and milestones, anticipate setbacks and track their progress. As part of the course, participants will engage in hands-on activities that will guide them to draw a project plan for their current PhD project and collect feedback from the group. Additionally, they will acquire strategies to address the main challenges and risks involved in a project.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • define what a project is
  • identify and frame their PhD thesis as a project management
  • implement key concepts of project management in a research environment
  • formulate a project goal
  • plan their project, define milestones and set realistic deadlines
  • identify interdependencies and risks, as well as ways to mitigate them

During the workshop participants will experience a trustful and engaging environment, where they will feel comfortable to open up and share their experiences, while being challenged to stretch and take some action. Thereby, participants will have a chance to not only learn new techniques but also build confidence.

Donatella is a certified Co-active coach and Leadership trainer and consultant. She also serves as faculty for The Coaches Training Institute (CTI), the largest in-person coaching and training institute in the world. She is visiting faculty for the full-time MBA program at the Ecole des Ponts in Paris and a managing partner for the Human Centric Leaders, an international alliance of cross functional leadership and team coaching experts. Donatella is passionate about individuals, teams and organizations seeking clarity and focus during times of change and uncertainty. Her work centres on leadership development, team dynamics, and career transition. Donatella holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from Michigan State University, USA and has worked at top universities in both Europe and the US, where she has served for 15 years as scientist, project manager, mentor and trainer and has published several scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
is a certified Co-active coach, trainer and consultant on leadership, team development, and change management. After a few years with Roland Berger Strategy Consultants he set up his own market research and coaching business, before writing a PhD about science cooperation in the high-tech and security sector at the European University Institute in Florence. As a policy consultant Thomas worked for the Manchester Institute of Innovation Research at Manchester Business School in the UK and for Technopolis Group in Germany. He advised the European Commission, national governments and international organizations on research and innovation policy. He trains doctoral students and post-docs at universities in Switzerland and Germany, as well as the Max Planck Society.
