Video Journalism for Researchers (425)

Video-journalism is one of the most rapidly expanding and exciting developments in the field of research communication: it is a form of journalism, where the reporter accomplishes many tasks, including pitching, developing and researching stories, producing, shooting, editing and presenting his/her news in a film format. In this workshop, we seek to challenge, inspire and train a new generation of researchers to find innovative, creative and journalistic ways of reporting research through film.

Workshop content:

During the 2days workshop:

Participants will get theoretical introduction into the following topics:

• Journalism (with special focus on science journalism)
• Stories: pitching, developing and researching to transform research story into journalistic story
• Production of low-budget films (camera, light, sound and editing software)
• Participants will actively work on the following topics:
• Screenwriting and storyboarding (using real examples from different research disciplines)
• Camera, lighting and audio (material will be provided by the trainer, however participants are encouraged to bring their own material, in case they have)
• Film editing (using Premiere Pro Software).

After the 2days workshop:

(PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PART IS NOT COMPULSORY)

After finishing the workshop, participants are giving the possibility to produce their own video-reports (2-10 minutes long) in 2 months. During this period they could ask for help and support from the trainer.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to prepare their own video-reports. In particular they will learn how to:

• Transform their research into appealing journalistic stories
• Prepare scripts and storyboards
• Use camera, sound and lighting material
• Edit their own video-reports.

Intended Audience:

The workshop is for all doctoral candidates (both Social Science and Humanities, and Exact and Nature Sciences).

In the case you have already participated in the "Film-making for Scientists" workshops with Dr Angelone: please note that "Video-Journalism for Scientists" is 50% similar to the "Filmmaking for Scientists". The repeated part from the "Filmmaking for Scientists" workshop will be regarding to the technical part (cameras, lightings and editing software). The other 50% will be different from "Filmmaking for Scientists". It will be about journalism, script and storyboarding for video-journalism and practical part (video-reports).

The Trainer:

Dr Samer Angelone is a biologist and filmmaker. He teaches 'Filmmaking for Scientists', 'Storytelling & Storyboarding Science', 'Filmmaking Marathon', and 'Video-Journalism for Scientists' at various Swiss universities and research institutes, and film festivals (e.g., Locarno Film Festival). He is the founder and director of the Global Science Film Festival in Switzerland (www.sciencefilm.ch), and works as a jury-member for prestigious film festivals (e.g. Planet in Focus, Cinemambiente Film Festival). Angelone has directed several fiction and documentary films in Spain, Switzerland, and Kenya, mainly focusing on issues relating to science and the environment. He has developed scientific research on population genetics, diseases, forensics, wildlife conservation, social media, and human-elephant conflict. Angelone holds a PhD in population genetics, and master's degrees in film studies and film direction.

Participants are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train between the city of their university and the location of the workshop (half-fare card, 2nd class).
