Description

Science communication rely heavily on photography. Through this medium, scientists can record, illustrate and explain their works, thereby enhancing the dissemination of their research findings. The aim of this workshop is to explore the basics of photography for scientific purpose and to become familiar with essential concepts (framing, composition, light, storytelling…etc.), to communicate science more effectively. To keep it simple and direct, we will use our smartphones!To gain insights as photographers, we will analyze number of photographies.

In the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to visit the Image Festival in Vevey (train tickets at your own expenses).

 

Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop, participants will be familiar with:

  • The art of photography: framing, composition, colors…etc.
  • The basics of storytelling through photography
  • The basics of photo-editing.

The Trainer:

Dr Samer Angelone is a filmmaker and scientist. He is the founder of the Global Science Film Festival, and works as a jury-member for prestigious international film festivals. Angelone has directed several fiction and documentary films. He teaches 'Filmmaking for Scientists', 'Storytelling & Storyboarding Science', and 'Video-journalism for Scientists' at different universities, research institutes and film festivals.
Dr Samer Angelone holds two PhDs in Film Studies and Biology.

 

Frais

Participants are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train between the city of their university and the location of the workshop (half-fare card, 2nd class).
