Editing and Revising One's Own and Other's Texts for Publication (103)

This workshop is intended as a writing and revising day for doctoral candidates currently at the writing stage of their article or thesis. Participants should already be familiar with audience design, paragraph coherence and cohesion, features of academic English, and rhetorical principles in the various parts of an academic publication because these guidelines and principles will provide the basis upon which participants will revise and edit their own and other participants' texts.


Target group

Please review carefully the information below before you request registration.

The workshop is designed for doctoral candidates who are not native English speakers but who have reached at least the C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). To assess their level, participants should use the following tool based on the CEFR: Participants should note that the C1 level represents a considerably higher level than B2, so it is advisable to take careful note especially of the differences in writing skills between levels B2 and C1 to ensure they have reached the C1 level. It is strongly recommended to take this workshop only after having taken basic writing courses for academic English.


Learning objectives

The workshop's main aim is to support the further development of the individual writer's skill, confidence, and ease when writing as well as revising and editing texts necessary to complete their doctorate. By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • revise their own texts to a more advanced level,
  • understand more completely how to organize information in paragraphs,
  • request specific language feedback on their texts and provide such feedback to colleagues,
  • handle their difficulties when writing in academic English more effectively, and
  • develop 'language friendships" with other CUSO doctoral candidates to continue improving their texts.



The participants' papers or writing they have chosen to work on will provide the content of the workshop.


Preparation for the workshop

Please complete the following tasks prior to the workshop using the template provided and submit all tasks to the instructor by email at the latest one week before the workshop.

For the writing sample, please:

  • Describe your specific strengths and difficulties in written academic English (in key words or a few sentences).
  • Describe briefly (two to three paragraphs) your doctoral dissertation or current research/writing project to provide the instructor and other participants with a broader context in which to read the text you want to revise or edit.
  • Select an excerpt of up to two pages from the text you are currently writing that you would like to revise or edit. Please indicate the title or subject of the text, what section it is from (e.g. introduction or methods), and whether it is a first, intermediate, or advanced draft.

For the "model article" (in English), please select what you consider to be one in your specific field of research. Ideally, it should be an article from a high-impact international journal and the type of study should be similar to your own. 

Please have your writing sample and model article readily accessible during the workshop. You should also have ready access to a computer as well as any reference material you usually rely on (this could be, for example, books, articles, websites, or material from other writing courses or books) because you will have time for editing and/or revising on your own.


Form of the workshop

The workshop will include input from the instructor, guided practice in editing, breakout groups, and individual work. During breakout groups and individual work, the instructor will speak with each participant individually about their wiring concerns.
