Mastering the Publication Process to Promote Your Scientific Career (505)

Lang EN Workshop language is English

Thomas Henkel, Laure Mellifluo

Description

The adage "publish or perish" is no longer up to date. The explosion in the number of scientific publications leads to difficulties in finding relevant information and problems in the visibility of publications written by young researchers. New modes of publication of scientific information are on the rise.

Researchers today need to select different strategies for their professional careers, the position of their laboratory and/or institution, scientific ethics; elements that are sometimes contradictory.

This workshop seeks to open the question of new modes of publication on digital media, in term of writing modalities, but also in term of new scientific and business models. What is possible today? Where are the limits?

The workshop will help the doctoral candidate to ask the right questions about publications, in order to make conscious choices that correspond to his/her personal goals.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar participants

  • can make informed choices for publication in order to enhance their scientific career.
  • know how to apply Open guidelines of the Swiss and/or European funding agencies
  • better understand issues of Open Scientific Information: Open Access, Open Research Data, Post-reviewing, Creative Commons.

Pedagogical methods and logistics

We will alternate theoretical discussion with the practical use of different tools. Participants will apply concepts we discuss to their publication in progress. We will address Open Scientific Information in a group game.

Participants will need to bring their own laptop configured with Wifi access for "Eduroam" and a VPN link already installed.

Prerequisites

The participant should

  • have a research paper in progress (prior to or in the process of submission)
  • master documentary equations (booleans operators, truncations, controlled vocabulary)
