Interdisciplinary teamwork is becoming a key concept for science and research in the 21st century. Strong teamwork and collaboration skills are also indispensable for success in a competitive business environment. In addition to accelerating productivity and the strength to innovate within collaborative groups, good teamwork also increases the motivation and self-esteem of all team members.

 

This workshop will provide participants with a basic understanding of teambuilding and teamwork principles, as well as the skills needed for efficient teamwork and collaboration, including how to positively influence others. Participants will discuss the strategies for improving teamwork, and will be introduced to techniques of creative problem solving and conflict management in teams. Finally, participants will receive assignments and guidelines how to work on developing teamwork and influencing skills in their working environment. Their progress will be mentored during the two months after the workshop, which will end with a skype 1-on-1 meeting.

 

Objectives of the day

  • Understand the concepts of teamwork and collaboration
  • Become aware of the factors that influence effective teamwork
  • Understand basic team development phases
  • Become aware of the skills needed for effective teamwork and collaboration
  • Learn a technique of effective brainstorming in teams
  • Understand the conflict management process in teams
  • Learn and practice how to positively influence others

 

Workshop content

Preparation (mandatory, 1 h)

  • Self-reflection questionnaire
  • An article from the business press to read

Workshop (7 h):

  • Workshop overview, get to know each other
  • Google Game: Win as much as you can
  • ABCs of teamwork and essential teamwork skills
  • Game: Brainstorming
  • Boosting group creativity and group discussion
  • Conflict management
  • Westiana Game: Teamwork simulation
  • Wrap up: Influencing and "what is next?"

Post-workshop mentorship phase (optional, but strongly recommended, ~16 h):

  • Assignment 1: Case study
  • Assignment 2: Self-reflection
  • Assignment 3: Teamwork seminar
  • Assignment 4: Teamwork implementation
  • Skype 1-on-1 session (30 min)

 

Learning outcomes:At the end of the workshop, the doctoral candidate should be able to:

  • discriminate between group- and teamwork; understand the steps and challenges in building an effective team.
  • understand factors influencing effective teamwork; and appreciate the value of developing transferable skills necessary for effective teamwork and collaboration.
  • critically analyse their current research group and work environment; design a strategy for implementing or improving teamwork and collaborations through bottom-up influencing.

 

Pedagogical and logistical aspects
Participants are required to bring only their notebooks/laptops for taking notes. The course material will be distributed in printed and/or PDF form to all participants.

During the workshop the trainer will utilize short instructions, simulation (games), discussion and feedback sessions, as well as self-reflection sessions to encourage learning and topic understanding. Mentoring of participants and their skills development will be provided to all participants after the workshop.

At the end of the workshop all participants will receive the attendance certificate from CUSO.

In a non-obligatory, post-workshop phase, and after completion of all 4 assignments and the end mentoring session the instructor will send participants an additional certificate indicating successful completion of the mentoring process and its outcomes.

Trainer:

Dr. Dimitrije Krstic is a freelance Researcher Developer, who organizes and delivers transferable skills workshops for research institutions in Switzerland. Dr. Krstic combines his extensive research experience in life sciences and in-depth understanding of human resource development processes to provide fun, interactive, and informative learning experiences.
 
Dimitrije obtained his Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from the University of Zurich, and subsequently went through an intensive postdoctoral training in Switzerland and the USA. In parallel to his Masters studies in Human Resource Management at Edinburgh Business School in UK, he worked for two years as a Scientific Talent Development Manager at an EU funded training project AREA. One of the outcomes of his professional interest is also an online free-access project for promotion of soft skills development www.PimpYourScience.org.

Expenses

Participants are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train between the town of their university and the location of the workshop (half-fare card, 2nd class). For full-day workshops, lunch costs will be reimbursed upon presentation of original receipts (no photocopies or scans). A reimbursement form will be supplied to all registered participants for this workshop.
