Research Budgets: How to Understand Them and Construct Them (319)

17 February 2020

Dr Jennifer McClung

Description

Young researchers often perceive the research budget as simply a file attached to a submitted proposal. This workshop will overturn this bias and focus on budgets as the core of any research project.

Participants will learn how to assess research projects to determine in detail the financial needs each would entail. Subsequently participants will produce their own budget based on their own potential research project, and get practice presenting their proposed project and budget in front of the group for feedback.

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this workshop, participants will know how to:

  • Identify and estimate the expenses involved in a standard budget
  • Develop their own research budget, in relation to specific research questions, to successfully carry out a research project (large or small)
  • Review various funding bodies that researchers can apply to given their specific projects/budgets
  • Analyse a budget to assess its completeness and accuracy.

The workshop will involve some lecturing interspersed with short individual tasks, along with group work and final individual presentations of prepared budgets.
