Description

Purpose

Although they are often called doctoral “students”, the doctoral dissertation process is actually the first real working experience for many young people. Moreover, both research and teaching positions involve complex social relationships. For example, doctoral students need to establish a constructive relationship with their thesis director and know how to effectively ask for feedback, guidance, freedom, or resources. They also need to collaborate with colleagues and lab members, to compromise, manage conflicts, establish boundaries, and defend their ideas and projects. Finally, many doctoral students need to manage students, to help them complete their master or bachelor research project in a timely and structured way, to push and motivate them, and to encourage and reassure them.

The purpose of this course is to help doctoral students acquire the necessary interpersonal skills to work effectively with thesis directors, colleagues, and students, and to prepare for the challenging relationships they will encounter in their future careers, whether they wish to take the traditional academic path, or that of the public or private sectors.
