Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course the participants will be able to:

  • prepare and give an oral or a poster presentation about their research work in an effective manner for a specific target audience
  • recognise the elements of best practice when they observe the presentations of others
  • formulate constructive feedback for peers about presentation performance
  • judge their own performance based on peer feedback and self-reflection

Content

  • Elements of professional research presentations: audience orientation; objectives of the presentation; structure; preparation and delivery; personal performance; use of body language and mimic
  • Design of powerful posters; effective use of power point for oral presentations
  • Presentation workshop: Each participant gives a ten-minute oral or a three-minute poster presentation with a new poster; rules for giving constructive feedback; applying the feedback rules to the presentations of peers
  • All presentations will be videotaped and a DVD of individual presentations will be available on request.

Session 1: (all participants)
Guidelines and best practice for poster and oral presentations, with input, small-group exercises and discussion 

 

Session 2: Half-day workshops with oral or poster presentations in half-groups.
Each participant attends ONE of the two workshops (20th or 21st March). Sign-up for the workshops will take place during Session 1 (6th March)

Location: University of Neuchâtel

 

Trainer: Dr Pamela Alean-Kirkpatrick holds a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Zurich and a postgraduate certificate in education. Since 1993 she has been working in tertiary education as an academic developer in Centres for Teaching and Learning, and in Human Resources.

Frais

Participants are eligible for reimbursement of incurred travel expenses by train between the town of their university and the location of the workshop (half-fare card, 2nd class).
